Adherence to ART — Key Terms

In this survey, providers include all people who serve or assist patients or caregivers to ensure that PMTCT therapy is accepted and completed or that ART is adhered to. Providers can include (both public and private sector) doctors, nurses, social assistants, community health volunteers, and other community or family members.

The term caregiver refers only to an individual (usually the mother) who is responsible for ensuring that a newborn receives and completes simple short-term preventive therapy and not to other individuals in the family or community who may be involved in other aspects of HIV/AIDS care.

Incentives and enablers for clients and caregivers are defined as types of support (material, financial, or otherwise) that:

  • Encourage more individuals to come forward for HIV testing

  • Encourage HIV-positive individuals to begin and adhere to treatment (in settings where cost is not a barrier to treatment)

    • In the case of PMTCT, motivate mothers/caregivers to accept and ensure completion of the full course of preventive therapy for their newborn

    • In the case of ART, encourage HIV-positive individuals to consistently adhere to treatment
