Malaria causes an estimated 300 to 500 million cases of acute illness worldwide each year, resulting in more than one million deaths. Those most vulnerable include children under five years, pregnant women, and people with little or no immunity to malaria, such as travelers or people living with HIV/AIDS. The impact is most striking in Africa, where more than 80 percent of malaria cases and deaths occur, but malaria is also a significant public health problem in areas of Asia and Latin America.
