With an estimated 2 to 3 million people dying from tuberculosis (TB) each year, TB remains the world's leading cause of death from a curable infectious disease.
Fueled by HIV/AIDS, the reemergence of a global TB epidemic is especially disturbing because effective TB treatment using relatively inexpensive antituberculosis drugs (ATDs) has been available for more than 50 years. Another alarming concern is that resistance to these relatively inexpensive drugs is growing in a number of countries.
