The Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus (RPM Plus) Program, with funding from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, is working with the Ministry of Health in Côte d'Ivoire through the Public Health Pharmacy (PSP-CI), the Ministry of AIDS, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Retrovirus Project-Côte d'Ivoire (CDC/RETRO-CI Project) to reinforce the institutional capability of the PSP-CI to develop prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services and antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people living with HIV/AIDS.

In 2003, RPM Plus conducted an evaluation of the institutional capability of the PSP-CI to support a rapid expansion of the PMTCT program. The results of this evaluation were presented in May 2004 during a strategy option workshop attended by the CDC/RETRO-CI project, national health authorities, and key partners involved in HIV/AIDS activities.

During this workshop, priority areas for immediate interventions were identified and RPM Plus assisted the PSP-CI in revising its workplan.

In an effort to reinforce the institutional capability of the PSP-CI to expand PMTCT services and launch a rapid scale-up of ART, RPM Plus provides technical assistance in the following key areas-

  1. Improving the pharmaceutical management capability of pharmacists and managers at institutional depots and pharmacies in the context of PMTCT and HIV/AIDS program implementation and expansion

  2. Strengthening the capacity of the PSP-CI to-

    • Address commodity management issues

    • Increase availability and access to quality medicines and commodities needed for expansion of PMTCT and HIV/AIDS services at all delivery points nationwide
