Kenya: Tuberculosis

Woman with TBWith the grants of TB drugs that the Global Drug Facility (GDF) is giving the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Program (NLTP) in Kenya, RPM Plus is working with the support of USAID/Africa Bureau to provide technical assistance for monitoring the implementation of TB patient packs. Technical assistance includes a survey of the patient pack implementation process.

A patient pack contains enough medicines for a full course of treatment, assuring that the health provider and patient alike know their medicines will be at the health facility when they need them.

Another advantage of the TB pharmaceutical management cycle for programs that use the patient pack system is that only one product is needed instead of the five products TB programs normally use.

Patient packs simplify quantification, and medicine receipt, inventory control, and distribution are greatly facilitated with only one product to handle.

Data collection in health facilities started in May 2005, with technical support for the processing and analysis of the information provided by RPM Plus.

The Kenya experience in the implementation of the patient pack system will be shared with other countries that plan to set up a similar system.
