The countries of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are committed to implementing the WHO directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS) strategy for TB control. Successful implementation of DOTS requires an uninterrupted supply of first-line drugs for treatment courses of up to eight months. Because drug shortages in both these Central Asian Republics were frequent and serious, RPM Plus worked to develop local capacity in competitive TB drug procurement through training and hands-on assistance to state-level procurement agencies.
The RPM Plus program work in these countries was designed to—
- Strengthen Ministry of Health capacity in competitive procurement of quality first-line TB drugs for the national programs
- Develop a system for uninterrupted supply of TB drugs
